Shaanxi is in fact often abbreviated to Jin and is a province of about 60,000 square miles with over 30 million people.

Here you will find the Jinci Temple. You approach this traditional temple via a route of ancient trees and you will then encounter the magic of the pavilions and bridges. It dates back to the 8th century and the oldest buildings in the Temple compound are the Saint Mother Hall, The Offerings Hall and the Flying Bridge across the Fish Pond, which incidentally is the only remaining one in the world. Each building is an exquisite example of definitively ancient Chinese architecture.

After much sightseeing your top Shaanxi hotels may well offer a spa so relax in the comfort of your hotels whilst the famed Chinese medicines spirits you away and recharges you for the next part of your adventure.

Not far from Taiyuan is Pingyao which has been assigned world heritage site status by UNESCO; this is an ancient city that has been remarkably well preserved. In the Old City center stands the Rishengchang Exchange which is the first known bank in Chinese history and once this town was a great financial center. The buildings themselves date back to 1368 and the Ming dynasty. There is as you would expect with such a history a range of architecture from the Ming and Din dynasties. About 6 kilometers from the city stands the Shuanglin monastery which has the most incredible painted sculptures created during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Zhenguo Temple is a little further but with a history of over 1000 years it is a must see. It is one of the three oldest wooden buildings in China.

When you are staying at one of the top Shaanxi hotels you will no doubt want to try the delicious delicacies that are part of the Chinese cuisine. In particular, the fried flat breads and noodles along with a lamb soup that is usually cooked with the stomach, livers and organs from the lamb and is specific to this province.

The spiritual nature of the Chinese people is evident in Mount Wutai which is a place of major Buddhist pilgrimage. At this highest point of the province you will find many temples including Foguang and Nanchan Temples. Dazhai village is also a holy site, found in hilly terrain. It is also known as the Dragons Backbone Terraces and is not a 'touristy' site as many of the villagers work in the rice terraces. Here you will find the country manages to retain its true identity and real regional culture.
